Foot Update+Weekend Plans+Running Thoughts

Happy Fri-Yay!  I just realized the title of this post is sort of a mouthful, but I guess I just knew I was going to discuss a couple different things, so oh well!

This week has consisted mostly of me adjusting back to the real world after my vacation, as well as getting back to my regular workout and healthy eating routine.  Not that I ate super unhealthy in South Beach, but I definitely had more cocktails than I typically do and I think just eating out all the time gave me a little bit of post-vacation bloat.

I’m on it Ryan!  I’ve been enjoying my green protein smoothies for breakfast, which is perfect on these days that feel like it’s 5,000 degrees outside.

Foot Update:  So I’m at the three week mark today of no running and I can feel a noticeable difference in my foot.  I don’t feel any tightness on the top of my foot where the stress reaction is and I don’t feel any pain when I walk.  My podiatrist said to rest it for 3-5 weeks so technically I can start running now, but I think I’m going to play it safe and just rest it for another twoish weeks.  I’m alternating biking and the elliptical, and taking Pure Barre three days a week.  Anyone have any tips for how to safely ease back into running?? I think I get overzealous and don’t want to do too much too soon.  That seems to be a recipe for disaster for me!  And I’m impatient.

Weekend Plans: Brandon and I have some fun stuff on our agenda for this weekend!  I’m taking Pure Barre Saturday morning, then we’re heading to Port City Brewery in Virginia for some brewski tastings.  I also need to go bathing suit shopping–the one I brought to South Beach is basically on it’s last threads and I had to hold the bottoms up when I was in the ocean.  I haven’t gone bathing suit shopping in forever, but I’m thinking I’ll use the money I found at the airport towards a new swimsuit!

ALSO MY LITTLE BEAR IS COMING TO DC SUNDAY!!!!!  Her husband has to come for work and asked if she wanted to tag along!  They’ll stay with us Sunday and Monday night before heading back to Dallas.  I’m so excited to see her again so soon!  Brandon and I actually had dinner with her dad (he lives in Maryland) last night, which was so fun.

Running Thoughts: Yes even though I’m not running I think about it often.  I think about how it’s going to feel when I get back out there and have a lot of ‘what if’s’ in my head. What if I don’t get back to my usual pace?  What if I feel tenderness or pain and my foot never goes back to normal?  What if I can never run again?  I know this all seems dramatic, but I’ve never had to rest from an injury this long and there are moments where it really psychs me out.

Thankfully my Pure Barre & brewery fun should take my mind off of all the running stuff this weekend!  Oh AND fun fact: a new women’s workout apparel store has opened four blocks from me and they sell Oiselle!!  I’m envisioning all the cute running/Pure Barre workout clothes I’m going to buy.

Have a great weekend!

What’s on your weekend agenda? Any runs?  I can live vicariously through you!

Were you a paranoid mess when you returned from an injury?

South Beach Fun!

I’m back!!  Sorry for the delayed post, I definitely needed an extra day to get myself organized and back on schedule.  Why is coming back from vacation so hard?!  I had such an amazing week in South Beach visiting my parents and spending time with my Little Bear.  We hit up the beach, went out to some amazing restaurants, and enjoyed cocktails in the sun!

It’s obviously amazing and awesome that my parents live right in South Beach, so we were able to both stay with them.  My momma spoiled us with lots of treats!  Check out this little welcome spread she had for us:

All of my favorite treats!! Doritos, garden salsa Sun Chips (best flavor), dark chocolate almonds and coconut cashews!

She also got us goodies from a local bakery–they had croissants that reminded me of being in Paris!  She served us up those alongside eggs and homemade mango macadamia jam.

Apparently her mail carrier grows mangos and gave my mom 30 of them, so she made lots of jars of different mango jams and a mango coconut bread!

Little Bear and I enjoyed some shopping on Lincoln Road, an outdoor shopping strip with every store you can imagine, and hit up the beach afterwards.

The weather was awesome pretty much the entire time we were there–even though it was warm there was always a breeze on the beach.

We also visited my aunt one afternoon and lounged poolside!

Check out the view from the pool balcony.

You can see the downtown Miami skyline in the background.  After getting some sun, my aunt welcomed us to her condo with an insane spread!

She made burrata and heirloom tomato salad, proscuitto wrapped asparagus, mini mushroom turnovers, goat cheese stuffed baby peppers, and cheese and crackers.  SO GOOD.  Then my mom baked cookies and we had champagne and cocktails!

We went out to some pretty amazing restaurants with my parents, including one place called Cibo where they have a wine angel!  The restaurant has a wall of wine that holds like 3,500 bottles and this lady attaches herself to a harness and goes and gets it!  I totally missed my calling.

We definitely enjoyed our family dinners.

Oh and fun fact, one of my Little Bear’s talents is she knows how to make napkin boobs and taught my mom how to do it.

My dad was thrilled.

My last night in South Beach included dinner at a Turkish restaurant complete with a belly dancer!

The food and dancing were both incredible.  I’m so happy and thankful I was able to spend time with my family and my Little Bear.

Although I miss them already, I’m happy to be back home with my husband and pup.

Oh and fun fact–I found $55 on the airport escalator!  I chased the guy down who was in front of me but he said it didn’t belong to him, so I got myself a nice little treat :).

Hope you guys have a great Tuesday!

Best vacation you’ve taken so far this summer?

When the last time you got lucky and found money?!

Friday Faves: Favorite Workout Jamz

Hello & happy Friday!  I hope you all had a great week.  I’m still resting my foot, wearing my Nike’s most of the day while walking around, and biking/strength training.  I’m happy to report I took a Pure Barre class Thursday morning and the instructor was easily able to adapt the exercises for me–I just couldn’t do anything on my tip toes, but it was still just as hard with my feet flat on the ground.  I’m so glad she was able to make it work for me so I didn’t have to miss out on classes for a few weeks!  I also got some cute new workout gear for Pure Barre–I won the sports bra during a Pure Barre Instagram sale and bought the tank top the other day.

I’m also super pumped because I fly to South Beach tomorrow afternoon!!  I’m visiting my parents for a week, and my Little Bear is flying out Monday-Thursday to see me!  We’re going to have so much fun getting some sun and sipping cocktails.  I probably won’t do any blogging next week so I can just focus on spending time with everyone, but make sure you follow me on the Insta to see pics of my vaycay!

I thought it’d be fun to do a Friday Faves post on my favorite latest workout jamz (do you like how I added a ‘z’ on the end to make it super cool?).  I love a mix of hip hop/trap music with some throwback songs too!

1. 2 Chainz ‘Watch Out.’  I love me some 2 Chainz.  I listen to this song all the time, especially when strength training–I feel like it makes me have a little more swag when I’m getting my lift on!  I also love to sing the lyrics to Brandon, just to remind him I’m hardcore.  Also, the music video is pretty hilarious (do people watch music videos anymore or am I the only one?).

2. Meghan Trainor ‘You Too.’  I mentioned this song before in a previous Friday Faves post, but it’s easily still one of my favorite songs to workout to.  The beat makes it great for either strength training or cardio, and makes you feel a little sassy too!

3. Desiigner ‘Panda.’  I’m not gonna lie, I felt pretty cool when some of my seventh graders started rapping this in class and I wanted to jump in because I knew the lyrics. This is another song I love when strength training.  #swag  Also the meme going around of the song cracks me up.  Listen to it and you’ll get it.

4. Macklemore ‘Can’t Hold Us.’  This is probably my favorite song on my half marathon playlist.  It just gets me so pumped–I love the beat and the lyrics.  I’m pretty sure when I do my long runs I sing it out loud, which is a great look.  I doubt anyone notices (sike).

5. 50 Cent ‘P.I.M.P.’  I used to listen to Fiddy all the time back in college and his songs are still great to listen to while I’m working out. Or while I’m getting ready in the mornings and dancing around.

I also love listening to some old school Britney and Christina, and Blackstreet!  No diggity, no doubt.

I hope you all have a great weekend!

Did I earn some cool points saying jamz instead of jams?

How To Stay Mentally Strong During An Injury

So as I mentioned Monday, my sports podiatrist confirmed I do indeed have a stress reaction on my second metatarsal.  I’m forbidden to run for at least 3-5 weeks, perhaps a tad longer until I’m able to walk completely pain-free.  I’m not even a full week into resting from running yet, and I’m already starting to feel the mental side effects of this injury.

As runners, we all know so much of the sport is mental anyway–you have to mentally push yourself all the time during tough speed workouts and races, when your legs want to quit and you just want to lay down and drink a glass of wine (maybe that’s just me, don’t judge!).  But you also have to find ways to stay mentally strong during times of injury as well.  Here’s what I’m doing to stay mentally strong and not go insane while I’m resting:

1. Strength Train!  I love strength training in general, but it definitely takes a backseat when I’m focused on running and building up my base.  I’m grateful that I have access to a gym and am able to go in the mornings and pump some iron.  Here’s an article about why strength training is so important for runners, especially when it comes to staying injury-free and being a well-balanced athlete.

2. Trying New Workouts.  I mentioned my new love for Pure Barre last week, and I was initially bummed when my podiatrist said no Pure Barre while I’m resting.  However, my running buddy/teammate Courtney asked the instructor at the studio if they would be able to accommodate and adjust moves for my specific injury and they said yes!  I’m taking a class Thursday morning and can’t wait to be back at the barre.  It’s such a great toning workout regardless, but I find it to be super helpful for me because so much of the class is focused on your glutes, hips, and core which are the areas I need the most work on.

3. Focusing On Nutrition.  Just because I’m not running doesn’t mean I shouldn’t be fueling my body differently.  Yes I may not need as many calories (although I’ve never counted calories anyway), but being injured isn’t an excuse to not pay attention to what I’m eating.  I’m trying my best to make sure I stay adequately hydrated, am eating plenty of greens and whole foods, and staying away from excessive amounts of sugar.  Just don’t ask me to give up my nightly piece of dark chocolate or I will punch you (not joking).  I also started taking vitamin D3 supplements to aid in bone health, in addition to my multivitamin.

4. Enjoying The Small Things.  I know this may sound silly, but when Rusty had his surgery last year on his ACL, he was still his usual happy-go-lucky sweet self, even though he had staples in his leg and a cone around his head.  He still was happy to go on walks and get belly rubs despite his setback.  Not saying I need/want belly rubs, but his surgery helps keep things in perspective for me–just because I can’t run doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy all the other things I’m able to do, like strength and cross train, go to Pure Barre, and enjoy walks with my pup!

5. Be Social!  Being injured doesn’t mean you have to sit around by yourself and mope.  Sure, you may feel sad and defeated and it’s okay to take time to yourself and feel all of those emotions, but I can tell you I feel better getting out of the house and socializing with friends/teammates.  I still went to cheer on my Oiselle girls at the beer mile, and went to happy hour after a Pure Barre class I couldn’t attend.  Just being able to interact and socialize made me feel ten times better!

Bad News Bears+Oiselle Fun!

Welp, if you follow me on the ‘gram, you already know I didn’t get the news I wanted at the podiatrist Friday.  Although nothing showed up on the X-Ray, the doc said the clinical signs all point to a stress reaction/fracture. So what does that mean?  It means 3-5 weeks of no running, elliptical or Pure Barre (major sad face), but I can bike or swim.  After leaving the podiatrist I went home and did a lot of this:

I’m allowed to mope and indulge a little bit!

My Saturday was pretty lazy and unproductive–ok actually super lazy.  Brandon and I went out with friends Friday night and had a little too much fun, so we spent the majority of the day napping on the sofa.

Saturday evening, I headed over to the Navy Yard area to cheer on my Oiselle girls at the Pacers beer mile race!  I had originally signed up for this but obviously couldn’t do it with my wonky foot so I had to sit out.  I’m not gonna lie, I was really bummed but it was still fun to meet everyone.  Look at my girls flyin by!

Our team came in second place!  A relay is totally the way to go for a beer mile–I cannot imagine chugging four beers on my own and running a mile.

We also took a pic with Lewis Kent, the national beer mile champ!

We totally geeked out when he mentioned Kate Grace winning the 800m at the Olympic trials.  Oh btw, this dude chugged his beers in like 5 seconds and ran like a 5:15/mile.  Insane!!

I also got my medal even though I didn’t participate.

How fun is it?!  It’s a bottle opener!

I spent the rest of my Saturday evening watching Bloodline and eating these delicious treats (from TJ’s, obvi).

Has anyone else been watching Bloodline?  I’m like halfway through and it’s getting insane!

Sunday morning Brandon and I slept in until like 8:30, then hit the gym.  Here’s my life for the next few weeks:

I’m glad I can still exercise, but the stationary bike has always been my least fave.  I wish I could elliptical, but oh well.

I also took Rusty pup on a little walk since it was so nice out.  Look at this goober.

It’s impossible to get a pic of him looking at the camera.  He always looks away–such a little sassafras!

I refueled afterwards with my fave Sunday combo.

Chocolate protein oatmeal!  Our favorite local coffee shop was closed so we had to settle for Starbies, so soy latte for me.

We also treated ourselves to a little al fresco dining at our favorite Mexican spot.

Sangria and carne asada for me!

After dinner, I met up with some of my Oiselle girls for drinks!  I was supposed to go to Courtney’s Pure Barre class but canceled after I found out about my stress fracture.  Good thing booze cures all ailments!!  I had so much fun meeting and chit chatting with everyone.

FYI don’t ever ask me to take a selfie.  I suck at them.  My long arms fool everyone into thinking I’m a master, but heads up I’m not.

I spent the remainder of my Sunday evening resting my foot, eating chocolate and watching TV. Perfect way to end the week!

Have a great Monday!
