Weekend Wrap-Up

I heart long weekends!  Especially ones complete with running, brunch, and some good ol’ R&R.

Saturday: My training plan called for a 5K ‘race,’ but since I didn’t sign up for anything official, I just completed it on my own.  I was up and out the door by 7:30, fueled by a shot of espresso.

The D.C. streets were so quiet–I’m a weirdo and love waking up before everyone else and just taking in the sights of, IMHO, the best city ever.  I did an out and back run around Capitol Hill, and averaged a 9:16/mile.

I’m also a weirdo and like to drink cold protein smoothies after a cold run, then complain when my fingers go numb.  Nevertheless, this chocolate cherry spinach protein smoothie hit the spot!

Look at my naughty pup eyeballin’ my food!  He’s such a stinker.  After I finished getting ready, Brandon and I headed to one of our favorite spots, Montmartre, for brunch!  Yes I get hungry two hours after I’ve already eaten.

Check out my sweet new vest Brandon bought me for Christmas!  #basic

I opted for the shrimp, avocado, and chickpea salad with toasted almonds, along with a mimosa (duh).

It was so good!  We also shared a starter of warm banana bread, and I stole a couple bites of his french toast.  Welcome to half marathon training, where I am forever hungry.

Speaking of forever hungry, I had a serious sweet tooth after brunch, so we walked over to Bayou Bakery.  I picked up a ‘dat O’ cookie, which is basically their version of a homemade Oreo.  Ummmm, yes please.

Look at that beauty.  I actually had to scrape off a majority of the icing because it was so sweet, but man was it good.  I think it put me in a sugar coma though, because I had a killer headache afterwards and felt exhausted, so I ended up taking an hour nap.  Totally worth it.

Also, Brandon was a good sport and vacuumed the house and cleaned all the bathrooms while I napped.  We made a bet during the Packers/Redskins game last weekend, and I said if I won, he had to do the house cleaning.  He did a great job!

Saturday evening, Brandon and I geared up to watch the Packers/Cardinals playoff game.

I swear Rusty does more than just sleep.  Unfortunately, that game didn’t end how I had hoped, although it was really exciting to watch.  There’s always next season!

Sunday: Brandon left early Sunday morning for a work trip (sad face).  I had a hard time trying to fall back asleep, so I dragged myself out of my warm bed and headed out for my 3 mile recovery run.

I averaged a 9:40/mile.  Instead of doing an out and back route, I decided to run along some different side streets, and ended up at my favorite coffee shop!  D.C. residents, if you live/work near Navy Yard, you gotta check out Lot 38!  I picked up my favorite soy dirty chai latte.

Just what I needed to thaw out.  That, and my chocolate protein oatmeal.

Topped with almond butter and raspberries for a little sweetness!  I decided to be a dirt ball and went grocery shopping before showering (I mean, I only ran 3 miles so I don’t think I was that smelly).  The forecast called for light snow starting around 11:00, and I knew the stores would be crazy so I wanted to get there as early as I could.  Bet you can’t guess where I went!

Why is Trader Joe’s so amazing?  I picked up a few items for turkey sweet potato chili, breakfast/lunch essentials (almond milk, spinach, roasted chicken, organic lunch meat), and finally found a bag of this!

I’d been searching forever for this stuff!  I’ve never tried it before (plus I’m too lazy to make it on my own, let’s be real), and I had some for lunch topped with Margaret’s taco soup and it was delish!  I’m excited to have an alternative to quinoa.

The rest of my Sunday was spent working on some reports (boo), watching episodes of Making a Murderer, and snuggling with this guy.

Have a great Monday!

Yes, there is always next year! I also went out for brunch with my husband this weekend and it was really nice. I helped my sister finish the nursery for my niece coming in March too! Along with a cold run on Saturday. I am geared up for another work week here despite the frigid temps! Have a great day, Jen!

So exciting you will have a niece! I saw your 18 degree run, crazy! I remember spending Christmas in Wisconsin with my family and feeling like my face was going to fall off! I almost went to college in Kenosha, but decided against it because I didn’t think I’d survive winter!

I’m definitely going to look for that cauliflower rice, although I do feel a little guilty that I could probably just make it. 🙂

I totally thought of you on Saturday night as I was watching GB from bed (and yelling at the TV). Definitely a good game!

I’ve never tried riced cauliflower- I’ll have to see if they sell it at my TJs. I also love getting out to run before anyone else is up! The problem now is its so dark in the early hours. I like when the sun rises around 6 and I can get out around then. The quiet sunrises are my favorite part about morning runs!

It took me months before I saw it at my TJ’s. I agree, quiet sunrises are definitely my favorite part about morning runs–so peaceful! But the pitch black/total darkness is another story!
