Friday Faves

Happy Halloweekend everyone!  Although I’m super bummed my parents are leaving Sunday to go back home, I’m really excited for our friends to get married Saturday!  It’s not a Halloween themed wedding so I won’t be showing up in my favorite costume to date:

A giant banana!  Also love that my friend Natty AKA my WFL (Wife For Life) wore a Spongebob outfit.  Pretty sure we were the best dressed people in Baltimore that night.  Also, don’t worry, if we become good friends I will give you your own special nickname like all of my other girlfriends have 🙂

Anyways!  I had a pretty low-key running/workout week with my parents in town (and I was too busy stuffing my face with all of the delicious food and treats Deb made).  Here’s the breakdown:

Monday: 20 minutes intervals on the elliptical with core and lower body strength moves.

Tuesday: 4 mile easy run.

Wednesday: 4 miles in the rain.  This should’ve been my speed day but the gym wasn’t open when we got there!

Thursday: 5K run.  I slept poorly the night before because of a huge storm that rolled through.  I was tempted to just sleep in, so I’m proud of myself for dragging my butt out of bed at all!  Also did some upper body strength training after work.

Friday: 6-7 mile run.

I’ll be taking Saturday and Sunday off since we’ll be gone for the wedding.  Who wants to wake up early to go to a hotel gym when you can be hanging out with friends and sipping mimosas?  Not me.

Time to hop into a few of my favorite things:

1. Adele ‘Hello.’  Is anyone else as obsessed with this song as I am?  I can’t get enough of it.  It’s so raw and emotional, it almost brings a tear to my eye.  Side note: I’m pretty sure I sound just like her when I’m belting it out in my car.

2. Reese’s Peanut Butter Pumpkins.  I’ve come to the conclusion that I really just can’t buy a bag of these and tell myself I’ll just have one per night for dessert.  I mean it’s really laughable.  They’re so addicting!  And I love the cute little pumpkin shape.

3. Food Network Magazine Thanksgiving Issue.  Deb gets me a subscription every year for this magazine and my favorite issue, without a doubt, is the Thanksgiving one.  Especially this year, since Brandon and I are hosting Thanksgiving at our house, so I’m in charge of cooking!  Some of the recipes that I’m planning on making are the classic roast turkeyapple sausage stuffing, and the best mashed potatoes ever.

4. Babies in Halloween Costumes. Ok so Brandon and I are pretty certain we’re not going to have children, and the one thing I think I will be sad to miss out on is picking out a cute baby Halloween costume.  I mean they are so freaking adorable.  Just look at these:

Luckily I can still play dress up with Rusty:

Don’t let his face fool you, he’s really excited to dress up as a wiener dog this year!

5. The Sweet Lobby. I’m not sure if this is a good or bad thing, but Brandon and I live four blocks from (IMHO) the best cupcake shop in all of D.C.  Georgetown Cupcake, Red Velvet, and a couple other places get a lot of hype, but I think Sweet Lobby is the best.  They have every flavor of cupcake (and macaroon!) you can imagine, and I love the ones that have the filling on the inside so when you bite into it, all the delicious gooey-ness (is that a word?) spills out.  Bonus: they have yummy vegan flavors too!  If you ever come visit D.C., you have to try this place!  I’ll walk four blocks and meet you and we can stuff our faces together!

I hope you guys have a great Friday and wonderful weekend!  I should have another wedding weekend re-cap for you Monday!

Are you a Reese’s addict? Which is better, Reese pumpkins or the Reese Easter egg?

Favorite cupcake flavor?

Best Halloween costume you’ve ever worn, or best Halloween costume you’ve dressed your baby/pet in?

Liebster Award

I can’t even tell you how excited I was to be nominated for this.  I’ve never heard of the Liebster Award before, and for those of you who (like me) don’t know either, it’s an award passed around the blogging community as a way to support, promote, and connect new bloggers.  Thank you so so much Margaret for nominating me!

Here are the rules:

  1. Post the award to your blog.
  2. Answer the questions that you were given from the person who nominated you.
  3. Nominate a few new bloggers you’ve discovered.
  4. Create 10 new questions for the nominees.
  5. Thank the blogger who nominated you and post a link to their blog.

Again, thank you so much Margaret.  I aspire to have a running shoe collection like yours and be as speedy as you one day!

Here are my answers!

1. What inspired you to start a blog? I think it was a combination of a few things.  One, Brandon travels quite a bit for work and I wanted a creative outlet to keep me busy while he’s gone.  Two, I love reading other blogs and get so much inspiration from them, and that led me to want to start my own.  My hope is that people who are looking to get into running will be inspired by mine, since I’m not a naturally fast runner at all.  If I can run half marathons, anyone can!

2. When did you start running? I started running off and on after college, but I didn’t start consistently running until around 4ish years ago.  Running is just so freeing for me.  Whatever is bothering me or stressing me out, I feel like it just melts away when I run.

3. What is something that you have always been good at? I think I’ve always been a good listener and good at making people laugh.  Even in high school I was always the ones my friends came to for advice or just to vent.  It’s the psychologist in me!

4. Name 5 things that bring you joy.  Snuggling with Rusty, having a snow day with Brandon and being able to snuggle on the sofa and watch the snow fall outside, seeing my students get really excited/proud about an accomplishment, running, and baking during Christmas with my momma while listening to Christmas carols.

5. If you had to completely change the direction of your blog and couldn’t talk about running or anything health related, what would you write about?  That’s tough! I would probably write about things related to my job/the mental health field.  Or politics.  That would bring on some drama!

6. What is something that most of your followers don’t know about you?  I think I tend to come across as sarcastic and super outgoing in my writing, and I am both of those to a certain extent, but I’m actually quite sensitive and prefer to only be around a small, close group of friends rather than a big group.  I hate having all eyes on me!

7. What’s the hardest thing for you to write about? I actually choose not to write about anything difficult or personal.  I don’t go into details about my job, relationships, personal beliefs, etc. I’m sure a time will come where I will write about and share some of those things, but I’m a very protective person by nature, so I would pick and choose what to write about wisely.

8. What’s the strangest or most embarrassing phase you’ve ever gone through? Oh Mylanta.  I would say fourth grade through seventh grade were the most embarrassing years of my life.  I had a pretty sweet bowl cut, glasses, and braces.  No I will NOT post pictures of myself during those years so don’t even ask!  I almost cried when my step-mom showed Brandon pictures of me during that phase.

9. What is the most spontaneous thing you’ve ever done? I’m not a spontaneous person by nature, I’d much rather have a plan! I think hiking in Glacier National Park was pretty spontaneous for me, especially since I’m afraid of heights, hate the thought of peeing in the woods, and am not a fan of bugs.  But I had the best time, and now we want to go to Yellowstone!  I want to see a grizzly bear!  From a safe distance, obvi.

FYI hiking attire is not fashion forward.

10. How would you describe your personal style? I’m not trendy, that’s for sure!  I guess my style is mostly classic/preppy–I like to have timeless pieces that I can wear with anything (i.e. a great pair of boots, a nice watch, dark skinny jeans, etc.) but mix those with some fun pieces too, like leopard flats or a funky jacket.  However, if I dress up I’d say my style is probably more edgier than daytime wear, since I lean towards shorter dresses with fun cut outs and high heels!  Hayyyyyyy!

Here’s a good idea of what I like to wear during the day:

Leggings, a not-too-loose top, flats, and accessories with a pop of color are always a good choice.

Dark skinny jeans with boots are a go to!  Disregard the creepy corn dude staring at me.

And here’s how I jazz it up for a night out:

I nominate the following bloggers:

Lisa @ Running Out of Wine

Jessica @ Fit Talker

Lauren @ goallthemiles

Rachael @ Catch me if you can

Sunshine in Motion

My questions for the nominees:

  1. What is the one food you would never give up?
  2. Describe your proudest moment/biggest accomplishment.
  3. If you were running a race, would you rather run without music or without a Garmin?
  4. What are your biggest pet peeves?
  5. What’s your favorite childhood memory?
  6. Where was your best vacation spot and/or a destination on your bucket list?
  7. What was your biggest fashion faux pas?
  8. If you could hang out with any celebrity for a day, who would it be?
  9. Would you rather change the past or be able to see into the future?
  10. What is the best piece of advice you’ve given or received?

I can’t wait to read everyone’s answers and learn more about them!  Happy Wednesday 🙂

Weekend Wrap-Up!

Sorry again for the late post!  I’m just trying to soak in as much time with the parental unit as I can until they leave (sad face).  I had a great weekend hanging out with my mom and running around the city!

Saturday: I woke up around 6:00 for my 8 miler Saturday morning.  It was cool and crisp out, and I had a feeling it would be a great run.  I prepped with a shot of espresso and a slice of pumpkin cranberry bread my mom picked up at a local bakery.

The bread was yum!  I decided to run around the city with no planned route and just stop once I hit 8 miles.  I’m loving the whole running-without-a plan thing.  It lets me just run around a bunch of the monuments and take in the sights.  I was having a great run up until I hit mile 5–then my stomach felt like it got hit with a ton of bricks.  Luckily I was right by the bathrooms at the MLK memorial!

I recovered quickly from my stomach fiasco and had a great run overall!

Even though the Capitol building is getting some work done, I still think it’s beautiful.

Downside to running without a plan: if you don’t end up at your house, you get freezing cold 0.5 seconds after you stop running and have to call an Uber to take you home.  Ooops.

After my run, my momma and I hit up Eastern Market to peruse the food and art.  It’s a flea market open on Saturdays and Sundays, and they have all kinds of fresh fruit/veggies, pasta, baked goods, seafood…anything you want!

I love checking out the fresh seafood!

The rest of my Saturday was spent helping my momma make a big pot of lentil soup, watching college football, and enjoy a glass or two of wine 🙂

Sunday:  I slept in until about 8:15, and hit the gym for a 40 minute elliptical session to stretch out my legs.  Then I ran to Lot 38 to get Brandon and I some dirty chai lattes since it’s our weekend ritual.  After that, Deb and I went to a place I like to call Heaven on earth.

Total Wine!  I am like a kid in a candy store in that place.  I had a $20 off $100 or more coupon, and I definitely put it to use.  Deb and I were hungry after leaving Total Wine, so I took her to my favorite Peruvian chicken place–Sardi’s!  Oh Mylanta, that place is so freaking good.  We split a 1/2 dark chicken meal with plantains and their house salad.

Deb loved it!  I spent the rest of my Sunday cleaning the house, watching football, and hanging out with my momma.  It was a great weekend!

Share your weekend highlights!

Do you have a Total Wine near you?  Are you as crazy about it as I am?

Friday Faves!

Yay for Friday!  I can’t wait for this day to be over (I’m in an all-day staff meeting, yuck) so I can get home, lay on the sofa, and relax!

I’m planning on another 8 miler tomorrow morning, and then spending the rest of the day with my momma!  I think our game plan is to peruse Eastern Market, maybe grab some brunch, and eat our way through D.C.  Sounds like a win to me!

Here’s my weekly running report:

Monday: 45 minutes elliptical & core work.

Tuesday: 5 mile easy run.

Wednesday: 5x400m repeats (ranging from 8:20-8:30 pace) with 200m recovery for a total of 3.5 miles.  Also added some upper body strength training and core work.

Thursday: 4.19 mile run.  You would think my Thursday runs would feel hard since they’re the day after my speed work, but they actually feel easier to me!  I averaged around a 9:00ish minute mile.  I felt like a B.A.!

Friday: Rest day.

Let’s hop in to what I’m currently digging!

1. Marc Jacobs DOT Perfume.  So remember how I went to Ulta last weekend and left with several items I didn’t actually need?  This perfume was one of them.  I’m not actually an everyday perfume kind of gal, but I loooooove this scent!  It has a subtle (not overly sweet) smell, and I’ve gotten lots of compliments on it.

2. Pumpkin Spice Caramel Corn.  One of the (many) great things about having Deb in town is that she surprises me with random treats!  She bought a bag of this caramel corn and I inhaled it.  Story of my life.  It’s so freaking good–caramel, spices, and toasted pumpkin seeds.  Go grab a bag, like now.

3. ‘Save Water Drink Champagne’ tank top.  How do I not own this tank?  I mean for real.  This would be the perfect top for brunchin’ it with the girls!  Lucky for me it’s on Amazon Prime–and I’m pretty sure my Little Bear would rock this too.  All signs point to time for me to order them before she comes to DC for Thanksgiving!

4. Michele ‘Deco’ Diamond Watch.  This watch is definitely on my wish list.  I’ve never owned a fancy pants watch before, but I wear a watch every day and would love to have a timeless piece like this one.  I love the subtle diamonds and the fact that it’s not over the top blingy and would go with everything I wear.

5.  Deb’s Cooking.  I feel super lucky that my momma is one of the greatest cooks in all the land.  I love when she visits because she cooks the best dinners–the other night she made roasted salmon, roasted brussel sprouts and carrots with a homemade tahini sauce, and homemade polenta.  My tummy is happiest when Deb is in town.  I’ll have to try and take some pics of the meals she makes!

I hope you all enjoy your Friday!

A to Z Survey

Happy hump day!

I decided to post an A to Z survey after reading it on Jen’s blog last week.  Let me know if you decide to do it so I can check out your answers!

A- Age: 31.  It took me a second to think about it.

B- Biggest Fear: Probably spiders.  Or not being able to solve someone I care about problems if they’re upset.

C- Current Time: 9:20 a.m.

D- Drink You Last Had: Coffee.  I’m sure everyone at work is happy since I would be a complete monster without my morning cup o’Joe.

E- Easiest Person To Talk To: My BFF AKA my Little Bear.

F- Favorite Song: Currently I would have to say Justin Bieber’s ‘What Do You Mean.’  However, I’m a big fan of some old school Blackstreet, Montel Jordan, N’Sync, BSB….the list could go on!

G- Grossest Memory: That’s a tough one, I don’t get grossed out easily.  I did have the world’s nastiest bloody nose when I was a kid and used to wake up to blood stained pillows.  Is that TMI?

H- Hometown: Washington, D.C.

I- In Love With: Brandon and our fur-child, Rusty!

J- Jealous Of: People who don’t have to work! I keep reminding Brandon that I could accompany him on all of his travels if I didn’t have to worry about a job!

K: Kindest Person You Know: That’s tough because almost everyone close to me is kind (hence why we are close).  Of course I’d have to say Brandon, followed by my Little Bear.

L- Longest Relationship: Brandon and I have been together for 11 years!

M- Middle Name: Leigh.

N- Number of Siblings: None! I’m an only child (and so is Brandon!).  However, I was not a stereotypical bratty only child so let’s set the record straight on that!

O- One Wish: To live with no regrets.

no ragrets

P- Person You Spoke To on the Phone Last: Either my momma or Little Bear–they’re pretty much the only people I talk to regularly on the phone, and Brandon too (when he’s traveling).

Q- Question You’re Always Asked: Why are you so awesome? Kidding! My students always ask why I’m so tall!

R- Reason to Smile: My parents are in D.C.!

S- Song You Last Sang: The Justin Bieber song–it was on the radio on my way to work.

T- Time You Woke Up: A little before 6:00.

U- Unique Talent: I’m fluent in American Sign Language.  That’s the only talent I can think of.  Oh wait, I’m also phenomenal at movie quotes/impressions.

V- Vacation Destination: Brandon and I are going to Cabo at the end of March for a belated anniversary trip!

W- Worst Habit: Probably being over-analytical (that’s what happens when you’re a psychologist).  I also know Brandon would add that my worst habit is leaving my shedding hair in the bathroom sink/shower ha!

X- X-Rays You’ve Had: I had to get my arm X-Rayed when I was 7 after I fell on ice and broke it.  I got to rock a pretty sweet hot pink cast and my friends signed it!

Y- Your Favorite Food: If you know me at all, you know I can’t pick just one thing because I love food way too much.  So let’s see if I can narrow down my top choices: Oreos, Mexican food, Middle Eastern food, pizza, mac n cheese, hush puppies, fried chicken, fruit….I’m all over the place!

Z- Zodiac Sign: Taurus.

I hope you guys had fun reading my answers!  Remember, let me know if you decide to do it so I can read your answers on your blog!
